THE WHEEL OF TIME ART OF EDSEL ARNOLD NOW AVAILABLE

Ta’veren Tees is excited to be working with licensed The Wheel of Time artist Edsel Arnold. Edsel’s unique WoT art captured the eye of Harriet McDougal (Robert Jordan’s editor/widow) when his “Selene” art won Judge’s Choice at JordanCon 2013. Since then, he has been expanding his WoT collection and is working on brand new (and fantastic!) pieces for an upcoming project for Ta’veren Tees. Make sure to keep an eye on our blog, Facebook, and Twitter for more news on that upcoming project! And, you can buy "Pink Ribbons" and "Selene" at:
www.TaverenTees.com/pinkribbons and www.TaverenTees.com/seleneprint

In all of his work, Edsel melds aspects of Art Nouveau, Beaux Arts, and Viennese Secessionism into a unique personal style intent on beauty of line. Get to know more about Edsel and his style, as well as his love for WoT here!

TT: What got you into reading WoT in the first place?
EA: I was friends with someone on a collectibles board and she found out I was into the fantasy genre but couldn't find anything new to read.  Her boyfriend was reading the WoT books and had her hooked, so she suggested I try them.  After she found out he cheated on her, she broke up with him -and the series - but I've been hooked ever since!

TT: What made you decide to begin drawing characters from WoT?
EA: As an Architectural Designer, I've done a lot of watercolored architectural/interior illustrations, but I've always harbored a desire to be a fantasy illustrator.  A few years ago I decided I needed to push myself toward that goal, and I made myself paint a scene from the book to show Harriet and Brandon at an Atlanta book signing event,  just to see what kind of reaction I got and if I was headed in the right direction for myself artistically.  I just loved the WoT, so it was a natural subject!

TT:  Why draw the Forsaken first and mainly, so far?
EA: Actually I'm 3 good for 3 bad, alternating Mat/Tylin, Selene, Nynaeve, Graendal, Birgitte, Semirhage.  I've really painted characters that intrigue me the most. But I have OCD, so I'll have to complete the Forsaken set!  The real question for me is why do I seem to keep painting men in submissive roles?

TT: Why have you chosen to mainly work in the art nouveau style? What attracts you to it and why do you think it’s a good fit for the Wheel of Time pieces you’ve done?
EA: I'm really a designer, more than a painter, and I'm really drawn to styles that are also architecturally related: Art nouveau, art deco, Viennese Secessionism, and Moorish and Byzantine patterns.  Linework is really important in all these styles. It's why I like comic art, as well.

TT: For the “Selene” piece, why go with Selene instead of “Lanfear?”
EA: Because that's how we are introduced to her, and she's so intriguing at first. Is she good? Is she bad?  When she's Lanfear, I'm just trying  to figure out her angle, but I never trust her.  Also, I wanted to do something Art Nouveau and Selene fit in so many ways.  I don't think you could just change the label on this. I'd picture Lanfear completely differently.

TT: So many people choose to show Mat’s warrior/Son of Battle’s side. For the “Pink Ribbons” piece, why did you choose to portray that time in Mat’s storyline?
EA: This is the painting I took to the book signing.   I hoped it would make Harriet smile.  Mat grew into one of my favorites mainly because he's just plain fun, yet loyal and good in spite of himself. This scene shows one of his most fun off-screen moments.  Plus, with his unfair luck, it's a riot to see him off balance. Their relationship kept me amused, so I loved  that he's really loyal to Tylin. It's hard to believe Mat actually irritated me in the first few books.

WHAT TO DO WITH THE OLD ART FROM A 2014 CALENDAR

If you've purchased the 2014 The Wheel of Time® Calendar, you know the art featured inside is pretty spectacular. If you haven't bought one yet, that's okay, too - there are still six months worth of awesome WoT art left! (You can get it for $10 at www.TaverenTees.com/14calendar)

But why should you buy a calendar when we're already six months into the year? Well, if you aren't planning on marking it with all your important dates, we suggest snagging one simply to get thirteen pieces of art for $10. What you do with it after is up to you, but we went searching for some different ways to re-purpose all that fabulous Wheel of Time art. Here are a few we found:

1) Use record album frames to frame them
Our calendar is 12"x12" which puts it almost exactly at the same size as a record album frame. We found an album frame that is exactly 12"x12", but if you buy them bigger, you can also use mat Cauthon board to fill the space. Consider framing six of your favorite images and tucking the other six into the backs of the frames for safe keeping. When you feel the need for a change you can swap them for six new images.

 More about this idea
Idea and photo from http://embraceyourinnerfabulousness.blogspot.com/
2) Hang them on wood blocks
Hang as many or as few as you like, depending on your wall space. The main idea here is the extra depth and texture.

Similarly, you can also use this tutorial from The Sassy Pepper for adhering your calendar images to canvas. http://thesassypepper.blogspot.com/2010/03/tutorial-mod-podge-canvas.html

3) Let the art "float"
Make Rand, Perrin and the rest really stand out in a "float frame," which you can purchase in stores or online.

You can also find DIY instructions for making them yourself if you are particularly crafty.

 4) Upgrade your tacky plastic drawers
If you happen to have any of those little plastic storage bins sitting around, you might consider this idea to give them an upgraded WoT makeover. Who better to guard your office supplies than Birgitte Silverbow?

5) WoTs on the table?
If your coffee or end tables are right for it, arrange some of the art under the glass. You may even consider arranging some of The Wheel of Time Playing Cards with it.

What about you? What other ideas do you have for re-purposing your past calendar images? Leave them in the comments below!

Robert Jordan’s Military Background
Many WoT fans might not realize that before Jim Rigney was a writer, he was a soldier in the U.S. Army and fought in Vietnam – an experience that affected his life, and eventually the story he would tell.

Rigney grew up wanting to attend West Point, but at sixteen learned his eyes were too bad for admission. He instead went to Clemson University, but ran into trouble because he was on a football scholarship, had chosen a major in electrical engineering, and was discovering girls and beer.  He then joined the army “because that is what men do in my family. That is simply the way it has always been done . . . the Rigneys have joined the U.S. Army to go where the shooting takes place.”

He went on to complete two tours in Vietnam, serving as a helicopter door gunner. It affected him profoundly. In his blog, he wrote:
“I have, or used to have, a photo of a young man sitting on a log eating C-rations with a pair of chopsticks. There are three dead NVA laid out in a line just beside him. He didn't kill them. He didn't choose to sit there because of the bodies. It was just the most convenient place to sit. The bodies don't bother him. He doesn't care. They're just part of the landscape. The young man is glancing at the camera, and you know in one look that you aren't going to take this guy home to meet your parents. Back in the world, you wouldn't want him in your neighborhood, because he is cold, cold, cold. I strangled that SOB, drove a stake through his heart, and buried him face down under a crossroad outside Saigon before coming home, because I knew that guy wasn't made to survive in a civilian environment. I think he's gone. All of him. I hope so.”
Jim Rigney, a soldier in uniform

Jim came home with a number of decorations, and went on to become a best-selling fantasy writer. He always had a great deal of appreciation and respect for every man and woman who was willing to serve his or her country.

NEW "RAND AL'THOR" POSTER TO DEBUT FOR SALE AT JORDANCON 6

The new Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn poster will be available for sale at the Ta'veren Tees booth in the JordanCon vendor's hall. The poster is 16" x 20", including a 1" white border. It will retail for $20.

The poster will be available for sale online sometime after JordanCon.

Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn was created by Ariel Burgess, the artist responsible for the calendar and playing cards.

"The idea came when I was about to fall asleep," Ariel said. "That's when my best ideas happen. I finally got my mind blank when this image of Rand formed. It started close up to his face and panned out. The fire was moving along with the tears streaming down his face. I felt this crazy urge that I had to paint Rand like that. It needed to be shown and it would finally represent him the most [out of my work]."

So Ariel painted, and we're glad she did. She began with a basic colored sketch, then moved to more realistic line art and flats. Then she began to make the sheepherder come alive by studying wounds and burns to add to his skin.

"I really love Rand, so I needed to show who he is all around. I wanted to show how tragic Rand is with his wounds burning into him and his old self melding with the new one. The tear is to show how painful it all was, and the stoic face was to show that he pushed through and tried to be as hard as he could when really the soft side of him mattered just as much."

Ariel has made many Rand al'Thor portraits over the years for various cards, posters, and personal projects. But this symbolic portrait of different sides and aspects of The Dragon Reborn is her favorite.

"The image really means 'Rand' to me. All of who he is and what he went through to become Rand in the final book. I feel like as much as Rand is drawn by artists, it is rare to see who he really is and how tragic he is."

Make sure to follow Ariel's new WoT Facebook page to keep tabs on her growing collection of art: https://www.facebook.com/officialwotartarielb

If you're not registered for JordanCon, be sure to do so before April 1, otherwise you'll have to do so at the door.

We hope to see you at JordanCon, and may the Light shine on you!
